Many people understand the word leadership in different context. It would be interesting to know what is the meaning of leadership for you?

My view is similar to what Vani said, about leading the ship and crew, and also Sharon said Walk the Talk.

I remember in my first Train the Trainer workshop the dialogue that touched my heart from my mentor is " Vani, Vartan aur Vyawahar ek samaan hona chahiye"

Apart from these, A leader must also know when to hold and when to let go, of the people in the team.

Right people in the right job, Spotting the abilities and skills, recognizing the unique talents of others and accordingly assigning tasks

Open to unbiased and non judgmental brain storming, being willing to learn and share always from and with all involved in the team, the area of influence, the situations and personal experiences.

Moreover the biggest quality that I feel a leader possesses naturally is conviction in the self and being willing to stand alone and follow the decided path even if no one was there to walk along or support.

A leader is a generative creator, follower and achiever

Creating and Walking the path which his/her soul believes in is right for self and others, decorating it with all might to make it beautiful for others to walk on, removing the obstacles from the path so that none other gets hurt on the way, and walking everyday, one step at a time and also being willing to exit skillfully when they know its time to leave and handover to the selected member the path and create another journey for self and others.

Needless to say, the above point I wrote is absolutely what I observed in you Aatmn as a leader ever since I have known you.

The leader in me began all with the thirsty crow story and I summed it up this way 5 yrs back in my TTT giving a meaning to my name, I had a

B urning Desire to know my path

A ttracted my path

N ot reachable it seemed

D erived ideas to reach

A pplied the ideas

N ever gave up

A ccomplished

after this I say and flew away feeling very happy like the thirsty crow does after drinking the water in the pot.

No matter how much I express my love and appreciation for you Bandana, it will fall short....all beautiful....the words you wrote, the soul you are :)  love

'Leadership'.. has the words 'lead' and 'ship'.. it's like leading a ship with the crew like a captain, 'the crew' is variable but the duties of 'the captain' remains constant. To carry the crew throughout the journey with great responsibility and balance. This reminds me of two impactful movies like 'Captain Phillip' and 'Titanic'.In the former movie, the captain shows tremendous dependability when his ship gets hijacked by pirates and becomes the source of intelligence and courage to protect his people and in the later, the captain on realizing that his ship is going to see it's end and there's no way to fight the waters, surrenders to the circumstance gracefully which in my opinion shows great maturity. This pretty much sums up my definition of leadership and being a leader. Taking the initiative or being the source is not enough, the passion in it should be strong enough to radiate through the leader and shine over the rest of his/her people.

How well you've expressed this, Vani!

Thank u Sharon :) U have put down your viewpoints in such a systematic way , which is also one of the qualities that make a leader- the skill of organization !

Lovely Vani, you really write well, Loved your take on this :)

Thank u Bandana:) It's amazing to see the association of the letters in your name to such meaningful paths in your life. I guess all of us seeker souls can relate to the thirsty crow story.

Yes!!! it is a simple and beautiful story and makes so much sense. All my life I hadn't learned through workshops or therapies, surely I always learned through Panchtantra stories, movies, songs, books and religious epics. Now all of those make sense in a better way, whatever we always knew :)

Beautifully put Vani :)

How often have you heard the comment, “He or she is a born leader?” There are certain characteristics found in some people that seem to naturally put them in a position where they’re looked up to as a leader.

Whether in fact a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a leader is open for debate. There are some clear characteristics that are found in good leaders. These qualities can be developed or may be naturally part of their personality.

Personal Qualities Found In A Good Leader:

  • A good leader “walks the talk” and in doing so earns the right to have responsibility for others. True authority is born from respect for the good character and trustworthiness of the person who leads.

  • A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader. People will respond more openly to a person of passion and dedication.  Although the responsibilities and roles of a leader may be different, the leader needs to be seen to be part of the team working towards the goal.

  • A good leader is confident. In order to lead and set direction a leader needs to appear confident as a person and in the leadership role. Such a person inspires confidence in others and draws out the trust and best efforts of the team to complete the task well.

  • A leader also needs to function in an orderly and purposeful manner in situations of uncertainty. People look to the leader during times of uncertainty and unfamiliarity and find reassurance and security when the leader portrays confidence and a positive demeanor.

  • Good leaders are tolerant of ambiguity and remain calm, composed and steadfast to the main purpose. Storms, emotions, and crises come and go and a good leader takes these as part of the journey and keeps a cool head.

  • A good leader is committed to excellence. The good leader not only maintains high standards, but also is proactive in raising the bar in order to achieve excellence in all areas.

Well said Sharon!!!! Summarized in nice bullet points :)
